Tsunami relief at BIA left to elements by Anton Nonis Repeated requests by the authorities at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to consignees to clear tsunami relief cargo had fallen on deaf ears. It has resulted large stocks continuing to accumulate. According to Airport Manager, I. M. Razeek, up to last Friday there had been about 1500 metric tonnes still uncleared. "It's creating problems for us," Razeek said. The airport officials have written to the Secretaries of Ports & Aviation and the Public Security, Law & Order, Ariyaratne Hewage and Tilak Ranavirajah respectively, for quick action but without success. Duties and taxes imposed on tsunami relief goods are effective and vary with different categories. Among the stockpiles are tents, blankets, kitchen utensils, baby foods, hygiene kits and hurricane lamps. The authorities expect at least the tents be cleared for the time being, before they become obsolete. Of those stocks accumulated, 966 mt are stored in a partly constructed warehouse near the airport thus delaying construction work on the building by one and half months. |
