Lack of DNA tech rapists go scot free by Shanika Sriyananda Over thousands of rapists and murderers are roaming freely around the country due to non-availability of 'Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid' (DNA) technology, which will establish the identity of paternity, the genetic and forensic experts warned. Deputy Solicitor General Palitha Fernando told the Sunday Observer that nearly 85 per cent of murders committed by the underworld gangs went scot free due to lack of evidence. According to Fernando, in most contract killings at the Colombo Magistrate's Court the accused gets acquitted since witnesses fear to come forward to give evidence. According to Fernando, the judiciary system was facing a serious problem of establishing the identity of the accused and needed to heavily depend on technological evidence in the future to bring the culprits to justice. "We do not have a witness detection system and the DNA technology should be made available", he added. He also pointed out the need to amend the century-old Evidence Ordinance Act to accommodate the DNA technology. Meanwhile, gene and forensic experts clamouring for a DNA Centre for the last 10 years emphasised the need of a national centre for DNA technology at the symposium organised by the Forum for Research and Development yesterday. |
