Hi-tech Chemistry Institute opens in Rajagiriya

Ceremonial opening of the headquarters of the Institute of Chemistry and the College of Chemical Sciences was held last Friday at Rajagiriya recently.

The new building which was built at a cost of Rs 30 million with a lecture hall, laboratories, main office, council room, library and instrumentation centre, auditorium, class rooms and an IT centre.

The chief guest Dr. R. O. B. Wijesekara, Founder Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission said the Institute has given to the country an alternative pathway to the production of graduates in chemistry.

Explaining future plans, he said emphasis should be made to develop programs for teachers in chemistry and also embark on global research. Every year, 80 students participate in courses conducted by the institute.

"We are following a syllabus similar to Sri Lankan universities. We have visiting university lecturers," explaining about the Institute Senior Lecturer of the Open University Sri Lanka Dr. R. D. Gunaratne said.

The course costs Rs. 125,000. Chemistry is a highly expensive subject. Institute of Chemistry has various levels of Degree programs. "In the Future we planning to expand our programs into other fields and also to conduct more training programs", Dr. Gunaratne added.

"To follow this course the student should possess three passes at the A/L examination and a pass mark in chemistry," he explained.
