Crash program in carpentry, masonry in schools By Ananda Kannangara Senior school children in the tsunami affected areas in the Southern and Northern provinces will be trained in carpentry and masonry under a special vocational program scheduled to commence by the Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education shortly. The Ministry is expected to begin the courses at schools or at the Ministry's vocational training centres, located in Matara, Galle, Ampara, Weligama, Ahangama, Kalmunai, Akkaraipattu, Mullaitiveu and Pottuvil. Minister Piyasena Gamage told the "Sunday Observer" that the objective of starting such courses, especially for school children to fulfil the urgent need of masons and carpenters to expedite the housing and building construction program in the devastated areas. He also said that due to lack of manpower to carry out the large volume of construction work at present, the government in some areas by constructing houses by using timber. Fifteen vocational training centres, under the Ministry were completely damaged along with equipment worth over Rs. 300 million. The Minister said that three teachers, engaged in duties at the training centres lost their lives and the student activities of over 1200 children came to a standstill. "However the vocational training in masonry, carpentry , welding, motor mechanism for school leavers in the affected areas have already commenced," he added. |
