New recruits man CEB counters

by Rashomi Silva

Ceylon Electricity Board has recruited 58 youths last week as cashiers cum clerks to man CEB paying counters in the People's Bank and the Bank of Ceylon Branches, without going through the usual advertising procedures, the Sunday Observer learnt.

Trade Unions complained that this would deprive the chances of qualified people getting suitable employment and would also spoil the chance of workers to enlist their children.

However, the Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha maintained that the youths were receiving a training and not a 'job.'

"What the youths are going through is a training, we get requests from many youths for training in the power sector, and we always try to accommodate them," he said adding that the trainees will get an allowance during the training period.

He also insisted that at the moment the CEB has no plans to recruit them but if they were interested in joining the CEB and if the management decides their performances are up to the standards they may be selected after a round of interviews.
