CWC leader meets President Ceylon Workers Congress would not leave the UFPA government, according to CWC sources. Estate Infrastructure and Community Development Minister, Muththu Sivalingam said that CWC Leader and Parliamentarian Arumugam Thondaman will meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga tomorrow to discuss several problems his party had been faced with. Minister Sivalingam and his Deputy M.S. Sellasamy submitted their letters of resignation to the Prime Minister, on Thursday over a dispute of opening a playground in Talawakelle. The playground was constructed at a cost of 350,000 rupees from the fund allocated by Thondaman. However, the Vice Chairman of the Talawakelle Urban Council, Bharathidasan, who was earlier with the CWC and now in the Upcountry People's Front led by Parliamentarian P. Chandrasekran, declared open the playground. CWC leaders urged the police to prevent the opening ceremony, but the authorities failed to take any action. The plaque unveiled by Thondaman was smashed by elements that led to clashes between CWC and UPF members which led to the resignation of minister Sivalingam and his deputy Sellasamy. Bharathidasan was arrested yesterday by the Talawakelle police to an alleged assault.(PM) |
