Indian PM here in four weeks

by M.P. Muttiah

Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will visit Sri Lanka between March 31 and April 4. According to reports, the date of the visit was expected to be finalised after the talks between Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and his Indian counterpart, Natwar Singh.

Kadirgamar, on a two-day working visit to Delhi thanked the Indian government and the people for their unstinted support and assistance during the tsunami diaster.

The Telegraph, published in Kolkatta, said Manmohan Singh had decided to start his first bilateral visit as Prime Minister with a trip to Sri Lanka, in a clear signal to identify Colombo as a good neighbour.

Singh's visit will be the first bilateral and substantive official tour though he had halted in London in September last year, for a few hours' working visit with his British counterpart Tony Blair, on his way to attend the UN General Assembly.

The Indian Prime Minister visited Thailand and New York last year to attend multilateral meetings. The Telegraph said, that Singh's bilateral visit to Sri Lanka was significant not only because it would be the first by a Prime Minister since Rajiv Gandhi in 1987, but also because he will be the first Congress Prime Minister to do so since then.

The Telegraph said, the proposed first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 18 years, would also be a categoric endorsement of the Indian government's support for the peace process between Colombo and the LTTE.
