SWIMMING Sampath and Uma fancied to retain titles By Leslie Fernando 327 swimmers, 275 men and 52 women have entered for 68th annual Open two-mile tsunami sea swim, Mt. Lavinia on Sunday March 7 starting at 8.30 a.m. at the Mount Lavinia Beach. It is sponsored by Mt. Lavinia Hotel together with Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU). The swimmers from 30 schools and 15 clubs will vie for honours in the men's and women's individual championships, men's and women's overall championships, youngest swimmer boys and girls, eldest swimmer men and women and the inter - services championships. C. Vijitha Fernando, Media spokesman and Co-ordinator, SLASU at a press briefing held at the 80 Club on Thursday evening, said that this popular event has been held since 1937 and this year's event is based on the theme, 'erase off the fear of tsunami and live with the sea'. SLASU will take extra precautions for the safety of the swimmers. Special boats will be operating every 400 metres of the course in addition to the normal Navy patrol boat. Mt. Lavinia Hotel have decided to award a special trophy in memory of late Daya Mohotti who has been involved in the two-mile sea swim for several years. Mohotti was the Manager of the Mt. Lavinia Hotel for a long period of time, added Fernando. |
