BILLIARDS Praput stuns Sandilya in semi-final Bernard Perera Reporting from Bombay The semi-final of the 4th Asian billiards championship between India's Ashok Sandilya and Thailand's C. Praput ended in a shock win for the latter. All Indians fans were expecting Sandilya to enter the final to witness an all-India final. Sandilya's morale was boosted when he won the first set by 101-90 points. But Praput fought back to win the next set by 101-80. Sandilya got off to a fine start in the set leading 14-0. From there on the Indian player was struggling to reach the table on six visits to collect 33 points, which disappointed the fans. On the other hand, Praput kept on moving steadily and notched up an unfinished break of 71 to clinch the third and gain a 2-1 lead. Sandilya however, fought back strongly playing his usual top table play and subdued the Thai and won the set 100-23. Young Praput though losing this set never lost his concentration in scoring his 101 points whereas Sandilya had many miscues collecting only 07 points. It was a plucky show by Praput in the sixth set. He cruised along swiftly to top the 100 points in only one visit, toppling the Indian to the utter surprise of all who witnessed the game. Last night, Advani was scheduled to take on to meet C. Praput to decide the Asian champion for the year 2005. |
