Celltel commits Rs. 180 million for tsunami reconstruction

Celltel and its parent company Millicom will commit funds to rebuild and equip 40 damaged Gramodaya Health Centres (GHC), in the coastal districts from Jaffna along the east coast and up to Gampaha on the west coast, in its effort to assist in the reconstruction of Sri Lanka, a spokesman for Celltel said.

The Gramodaya ("Village reawakening") health centre provides the primary healthcare needs of women and children with each serving a population of about 5,000 to 8,000 people.

The Primary Health Care team comprises Public Health Midwives, Public Health Nursing Sisters and the medical officers of Health (MOH) of the area. The Gramodaya Health Centres through its program of antenatal and postnatal Clinics for Pregnant Mothers, Child Welfare Clinics, Immunisation activities for children and mothers, Reproductive Health Care Programs for women, family planning education and services and Health Education Program on Sanitary aspects, and many other activities which are mainly related to Preventive Health Care Services makes a significant contribution to the welfare of women and children in Sri Lanka.

The project, costing over Rs. 180 million, will be supervised by Celltel through independent contractors based on the plans approved by the Government. A separate account will be maintained for the same, which will be audited. The project will commence shortly.

As soon as the construction of a GHC is completed, it will be fully equipped and handed over to the health authorities enabling the resumption of services in the affected areas.

The spokesman said Celltel and Millicom have been deeply committed to Sri Lanka and as the pioneer Telecom operator since 1989, feel strongly towards participating in nation rebuilding as a responsible corporate citizen.

The commitment was made possible by the keen interest taken by Millicom to join the effort to rebuild Sri Lanka to overcome this unprecedented catastrophe, he said. Minister of Healthcare, Nutrition and Uwa Wellassa Development Nimal Siripala de Silva lauded the effort of Celltel in coming forward as a socially responsible corporate and help in the nation rebuilding process with the commitment to reconstruct damaged Gramodaya Health Centres.

Dumindra Ratnayaka, CEO of Celltel said "Celltel is glad to contribute to bringing back hope, in the lives of the affected Sri Lankans, especially those living in provincial towns and do not have the benefit of using facilities available in the cities and with this Celltel is committed to the development and growth of Sri Lanka".
