Treasury grants Rs. 15m for school bus project by Anton Nonis Appreciating National Transport Commission's (NTC) efforts to create a good bus service for schools, the Treasury has provided Rs.15 million initially for the project. School authorities in constant touch with the NTC, have agreed to detail two school teachers to ride in the school bus along with the children when the sessions close for the day in the afternoon. The two teachers selected will travel till the end of the journey when all the children have got down from the bus. The NTC will allow free travel for the two teachers issuing them with a bus pass. The teachers will provide security for the children and take care of them during the journey. The Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB) will issue monthly season tickets for the children at half the normal fare. Children who travel on a daily payment basis are also eligible for half rates. The SLCTB authorities say this would be a great relief for the children travelling in school buses compared to the heavy amounts charged by school vans. School authorities will inform those children choosing to travel by school bus the approximate time the bus on that particular route would arrive at the bus stand. The departure time from the school too would be made known to them. NTC sources said requests by schools for school buses keep on pouring at the NTC office in Narahenpita. They said, last week there had been 60 fresh applications from schools in Colombo, 20 from Kurunegala and 5 from Deniyaya. The NTC will strive to provide at least 100 buses initially which would be increased to 200 before the end of the year. |
