Alleged fraud at Kandy school probed by Chamitha Kuruppu President Chandrika Kumaratunga last week instructed the Presidential Investigations Unit on Grade One admissions to commence investigations of an alleged massive fraud in a leading boys' school in Kandy. A special team was sent to Kingswood College, Kandy on Friday to commence investigations, Presidential Investigations Unit Chief, A.A. Wickremesinghe told the Sunday Observer. Refusing to comment further about the 'frauds' Wickremesinghe said; "it will be premature to say anything now, but as the President instructed, investigations will be carried out immediately and impartially,". Meanwhile, the unit will meet parents of Vishaka Vidyalaya, Colombo on Tuesday to study further about irregular admissions. The unit is currently conducting investigations about corruption in admissions to Royal College-Colombo, Isipathana College-Colombo, Anula Vidyalaya-Nugegoda, Visaka Vidyalaya-Colombo and St. Paul's Milagiriya-Colombo 4. "Parents who have applied to admit children into these schools with qualifications will be called for a discussion with Education Secretary, Dr. Tara De Mel," Wickremesinghe said. However, although recommended by the unit, nearly 30-40 students who failed to gain admission, are yet to enter schools. According to Wickremesinghe apart from them, over 100 students residing within the qualified distance, have not been selected to any of the schools in the area. "There are no vacancies for these students in the schools," he further said. |
