They also got relief by Anura Maitipe The government has made arrangements to provide financial assistance through Presidential Task Force for 300,000 employees who had lost their employment following tsunami disaster, Labour Commissioner M. Mahihahewa told the Sunday Observer. The survey conducted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in the tsunami affected areas had revealed that 130,000 employees in the formal sector have lost their jobs and another 270,000 workers have lost their jobs in the informal sector following tsunami disaster, he added. In addition to this 55,000 workers have become either partly or fully disabled. This group has been categorized by the ILO as a vulnerable group that needed continuous support to uphold their livelihood, he pointed out. The ILO has recommended a six month cash allowance under the cash transfer program for formal workers who had lost their jobs and rapid job recovery scheme for informal workers on the community based projects in the reconstruction process of the tsunami affected areas, he said. Under this program the self-employed entrepreneur who had lost their traditional industries like coir product, allied products of fishing and hotel industry would also be provided with financial assistance to re-commence their self employment within a short possible period,he noted.The vulnerable group will be provided with continuous financial assistance along with free medicine, shelter and security and safety of their lives, he said. |
