IPA pledges support for tsunami affected police families

The International Police Association (IPA) President Michael Odysseos pledged the support of the association to assist Police families affected by tsunami in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Odysseos was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the International Police Association (Sri Lanka Section) held at the Junior Police Officers' Mess in Colombo yesterday.

IGP Chandra Fernando succeeded former IGP Indra de Silva as the new IPA President (Sri Lanka section) at the AGM yesterday.

IPA Chief Michael Odysseos who is a Cypriot speaking at the meeting further said that he was highly disturbed over the tsunami devastations in Sri Lanka and pledged his support to the police families affected by tsunami.

He also said that there were several police families in the South Asian region affected by tsunami and he would be co-ordinating with the victims to provide them with assistance. He also met members of police families affected by tsunami.

Father of a young Sub Inspector from Bampalapitiya who was killed along with his wife and two children in Hambantota, a young girl who lost her father who was a police sergeant and a woman police Sub Inspector who lost her husband in Galle were some of the police family members that met the IPA chief and narrated to him their sad story.

The IPA chief took down the details of the families and pledged that he would take up the matter with his association. The Vice President of the IPA Sri Lanka former Deputy Inspector General of Police Ignatius Canagaretnam said 19 Sri Lankan policemen were killed in the tsunami.

The newly elected President of the IPA Sri Lanka IGP Chandra Fernando said that he would do his best to strengthen the association activities in Sri Lanka.
