Kotmale: no evidence of volcanic activity by Anura Maitipe A research mission was conducted by a team of geologists in caves at "Koth Thun Goda Mount" in the Kotmale Divisional Secretariat area to verify the source of smoke in these caves, Geology Survey and Mines Bureau (GS&MB) Chairman Prof. T.G.R. Dharmaratne told the Sunday Observer. Prof. said "Sri Lanka is not vulnerable to volcanos. However we will conduct further research in the area to verify the reason for wisps of smoke in these caves. He urged the public to get away from the site until completion of the research. The main task of the GS&MB is to keep a vigil on such occurrences not only in the country but in the region as well. The information provided by public is very useful and the GS&MB would act on these clues. When asked about the prediction made by British scientists about the possibility of an earthquake in and around Sumatra island, Prof. Dharamaratne said that earthquakes cannot be predicted. Japan is one of the most developed in the subject of geology and meteorology with all their sophisticated equipment, they are unable to predict future such occurrences. |
