99th 'Battle of the Maroons' drawn : Chandimal foils victory bid of Kingswood

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr.

A courageous knock of 52 not out with 9 fours off 92 deliveries by 15-year-old J. Chandimal Ratnayake for Dharmaraja foiled Kingswood from breaking a 46-year jinx in the 99th 'Battle of the Maroons' which ended in a draw at the Asgiriya Stadium yesterday. But Kingswood took the honours in this year's battle which ended in a draw for the 25th consecutive year.

Chandimal Ratnayake came to the rescue when the Rajans were struggling at 77 for 5 and the Kingswoodians still win a lead were on course for victory. But he played very cautiously, choosing the right ball to hit and thwart Kingswoodians' victory bid.

Earlier, Kingswoodians resuming at 135 for 3, lost their next 3 wickets for the addition of 14 runs before Niroshan Perera rescued them with a fine knock of 52 not out off 80 deliveries with 8 hits to the ropes. He also bowled well to fake 4 for 38 in Rajans' second innings to have them in a hop.

Chandimal Ratnayake for his brilliant knock was adjudged 'Man of the Match'.
