Asia-Africa Summit to be held in Indonesia

Jakarta, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) The Asia-Africa summit will be held in this capital from April 21-23, with five world leaders attending, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry announced Friday.

This meeting will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first conference held in the Indonesian city of Bandung, where participants joined forces to struggle against colonialism.

Asian and African countries were invited to participate, and 11 other nations will be observers, together with 25 non-aligned nations and 21 international organizations. The summit has been planned for two years, and the expected outcome is the creation of a new association to confront injustice, terrorism, and economic disintegration. The 1955 Asian-African Conference concluded with publication of the "Ten Principles of Bandung," which highlighted respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, either large or small.

G-20 Urges to Terminate Agricultural Subsidies

New Delhi, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) Government ministers from underdeveloped countries members of the Group of 20 (G-20) called the industrialized world to end the damaging multimillionaire subsidies that turned the apple of discord with the US, Japan, and EU.

The 48-hour G-20 meeting specially called to end subsidies on agriculture and exports to unlock present negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) like the Round of Doha, a notion confirmed by Indian Trade Minister Kamal Nath.

The quorum agreed that the barriers imposed by the developed countries on the exchange of goods and services annuls one of the few chances to escape poverty, the reason for the call from Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim for sensitivity regarding food safety.

The meeting will help the G-20 establish a common front on key sectors like agriculture and investments for the year"s end meeting in Hong Kong. The G-20 present member countries are India, Brazil, China, Chile, Argentina, Pakistan, Bolivia, Cuba, Egypt, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, the Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
