Arts

Gamini Fonseka Foundation Academy of Film and Performing Arts :

Giving cinema a professional clout

The Gamini Fonseka Foundation, to be set up shortly will continue his vision as a legend in the film industry and prevent the exploitation of his good name, watched over by him throughout his life's journey. The setting up of a legal establishment of this nature will safeguard artistes appreciated as national treasures.

Actor and politician Gamini Fonseka was also known to be a complete man of arts. His philosophy was to use art as a medium to bring all people together. The speeches and other artistic contributions he made bears testimony to that.

The Foundation will focus on this vision of Gamini as a priority, shaping its activities based on discipline, decorum, dignity, dedication and devotion, that were the hallmark of his life. In his commitment to upgrade the local film industry, and the lifestyle of film stars and technicians, he rose to be the most innovative and the best processed quality provider in the industry.

The proposed Foundation will collect and protect the works of the late Gamini Fonseka. It will benefit all those in the film industry. It is now seen that the downfall of the industry, was mainly due to the lack of facilities, for training people, to the level of professionals.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke and Dr. Lester James Peiris will be among the team of officials who will guide the task of achieving the objectives of the Foundation, while Mrs. Gamini Fonseka will be one of the patrons. The Foundation hopes to collect and restore the works of the late Gamini in the fifty years of his contributions to the cinema, including films, scripts, songs and poetry, press articles, electronic media videos, still photographs and audio and video recordings of all recording contributions made by him in all the fields he participated.

His family will have the final word on the right to preserve and protect and the authority to his works, while the key areas of a land on lease from the state construction finances and an administration management for the Foundation needs to be still probed into. The Foundation will seek to set up professional standards in the creative areas of acting, a sense of appreciation, directing, producing, script writing, make-up, art direction, special effects, visual arts (painting and sculpture), speech and drama, theatre, music and dance.

The technical aspects will focus on cinematography, photography, lighting, audio, video, lab work and theory. The Foundation will provide services on professional training, studio space for photography and equipment. It will also hire equipment such as 35mm super sixteen cameras, tracks, dollies, cranes, editing facilities including Avid editing, linear editing and video film converters. The Public Trustee will be the custodian of the Foundation.

In aid of tsunami victims

Artist Dammith Krishantha will hold an exhibition of his paintings, at the Lionel Wendt on April 1,2 and 3. His art developed through his fascination for ancient temple paintings, and he devised an innovative style of circular compositions, which has been described as one that is contrary to the style of the world famous Piccaso.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the Museum of Galpihilla Rajamaha Viharaya, Hurikaduwa, Kandy, Dammith has two of his paintings on permanent display.

He has also exhibited at Artonia Gallery, Colombo Hilton, Shaarika Gallery, Colombo Plaza Hotel, and in England, France, Saudi Arabia and Australia, besides numerous national exhibitions. Part of the proceeds of his April exhibition, will go to the tsunami relief funds, being mobilised by the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid City, to relocate or reconstruct schools in some of the affected areas.
