The Ceylonese Connection Get ready to be entertained as the main hall of Trinity College, Kandy comes alive with laughter on April 2, from 6 p.m. onwards when the college Drama Society presents two plays by Sri Lankan playwright H. C. N. De Lanerolle, in 'The Ceylonese Connection.' The plays are set in the 1940s at the time Lanka gained independence. The first play, Fifty-Fifty follows the election campaign of Dionysius Sumanasekera (Jaliya wijewardene), a wealthy country gentleman in the midst of the hilarious antics of his friends (Thambypillai Heshan Pethiyagoda) and Hadjiar (Sajid Nasim), his flirtatious wife Charlotte (Barana Waidyathilake), etc. The play is actually an analysis of the fifty-fifty proposal put forward by G.G. Ponnambalam, an attempt to show its faults in a lighter vein. The sequel, 'The Senator' is set three years later. It has the communist nephew of Dionysius, Somapala (Harsha Dissanayake) also known as Ralahami, follow in the footsteps of his uncle and enter the senate, an attempt that ends in failure and ultimately the revocation of his citizenship. The brainchild of Jaliya Wijewardene, the President of the College Drama Society, it is entirely funded by the school drama fund. The cast comprises students from Grade 10 upwards who have been practising since January. The tickets are priced at Rs.300, 200, 100 are available at the gate. Proceeds are in aid of rebuilding two villages in Karaitivu and Nintavur. The boys of Trinity have a penchant for the field of drama, being a winner at the Inter School Shakespeare Drama Competitions last year. So make sure to free your schedule, get your tickets and be entertained, all for a worthy cause. |
