Tharuna Aruna - placements for 10,000 graduates in private sector

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

The government is in the process of providing placements to 10,000 graduates in the private sector under the Tharuna Aruna (TA) 11 program within the next five years.

The objective is to provide a sustainable solution to the youth unemployment and to help the private sector to recruit skilled personnel, its Chief Executive Officer Sam Stembo told the Sunday Observer.

He said that the TA 11 program is funded by the World Bank and the government. The primary goal of the program is to re-orient unemployed graduates' career aspirations towards the private sector. This program was launched in February.

Stembo said that their target is to provide 2,000 employment opportunities in the private sector for a year, and expect 2,000 private sector companies to be registered with them to fulfil the endeavour.

"It also plans to further strengthen the bond between Sri Lankan graduates and the private sector and exploit the talents and capabilities of graduates for the growth and development of the private sector," he said.

According to Stembo more than 110 graduates have secured employment while 315 private sector companies have been registered with them.

The TA 11 program will register unemployed graduates from Sri Lankan universities, under 35 years and seek employment in the private sector, NGOs and selected commercially oriented public sector organisations.

Based on the placement history of the Institute (specific degrees, area of placement), through a computer based randomised process, the registered graduates will be selected and called upon to follow an Initial Orientation Program (IOP) on five consecutive days, Stembo said.

The IOP is designed to contribute towards the attitudinal change of the graduates and provide a positive outlook towards private sector work culture. IOP will also highlight the opportunities available in the private sector as well as the challenges. In addition, graduates will receive practical training to face interviews successfully.

Director TA Ranjith Hettiarachchy said that this will provide an excellent gateway to Sri Lankan graduates to enter the vibrant private sector.
