Abans Service Dept aids tsunami victims The Service Department of Abans, responded immediately to the urgent need of its workforce and customers affected by the tsunami. A fact-finding operation got under way from day one after the December 26 catastrophe, which enabled the company with its islandwide computerised network to communicate with those affected and to provide assistance immediately. The Abans Service Centre provided free service in an effort to restore normalcy as quickly as possible, to all its customers in the tsunami affected areas restoring damaged appliances. Free spare parts worth millions of rupees were also distributed. The service was broadbased and customers in all areas, which were devastated benefited. Many customers reported to the company that no other organisation had attended to their needs in such a prompt manner. According to Allen Raffel, Director, the Service Centre too had on its staff, victims of the tide, who had lost their possessions and even houses. The company was able to provide them with essentials and other requirements immediately with a fund collected by the fellow staff and the workforce, who donated a day's salary. The Directors also contributed generously. Twenty-one employees were given dry rations and rental allowances. Mrs. Aban Pestonjee, the founding chairperson of Abans Group of Companies said that monetary assistance was also given to employees who were severely affected and even the kinsfolk of such employees were helped in kind and cash. Abans is at present in the process of building a 40 unit-housing scheme for 40 families who were displaced by the tsunami. |
