CNCI Industrial Excellence 2005 contest

by Elmo Leonard

The contest to choose the winners for the fourth annual `Achiever of Industrial Excellence 2005' conducted by The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) will take place shortly.

Among the objectives of this premier chamber of industry in the country is to honour and reward industrialists in Sri Lanka and the SAARC region for excellence achieved. The Chamber will issue application forms to contestants on April 4, and the closing date for entries will be June 15. The winners will receive their awards on August 5. Newspaper advertisements will carry details of the event.

Last year's crystal award winner (thrice successive gold award winners receive crystal awards) - Industrial Stainless Steel Fabrication (Pvt) (ISF) Colombo obtained bank loans for expansion, and opened an industrial unit in India consequent to their success in winning Achiever Awards, director, N. Shivakumaran told the media.

ISF, which is in technical collaboration with a Danish firm, also exports refrigerated cooking equipment and ice cream making machinery to Germany and Middle Eastern countries. Some of the ISF manufacture are machine parts for the Indian industry.

Winners will be selected in four categories, large (industries), medium, small and micro, and participants could vie for honours at provincial and national level.

Industrialists in the western province will have to contest at national level because of their access to technology and industrial culture CNCI Chairman, Nimal Perera said. Industrialists from Batticaloa and Moneragala will be among the two `handicapped provinces' this year to receive `favoured status' in the contest. Each category will carry gold, silver, and bronze trophies, with two merit awards.

A special feature of the awards scheme is to recognise local industrialists who have set up manufacturing units in the SAARC region in their own capacity or as joint ventures where Sri Lankan investment is over 50 per cent, the Chairman of the organising committee, Gamini Marambe said.
