Bigwigs desert SB by Kithsiri Wanasinghe & S. T. B. Seneviratne The Satyagraha campaign held in front of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura last Friday to force the government to release UNF MP S. B. Dissanayake ended on a sad note for the participants as the UNP bigwigs who pledged to be there were not present at the event. UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and many other bigwigs of the party were due to participate in the Satyagraha campaign, but only Kalutara District MP Rajitha Senaratne and Matara district MP Mahinda Wijesekera were at the event. UNP members as well as supporters in the area were shocked that not a single UNP MP representing the Anuradhapura district was at the campaign. Except the two parliamentarians from Kalutara and Matara, only North-Central Province Opposition MP Keerthisinghe Wijeratne was there. However, publicity had been given that all North-Central Province MPs would participate at the event. The march which began from the Anuradhapura Youth Centre premises proceeded to Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises with a crowd of about 150-200 persons causing much distress to jailed MP Dissanayake's wife and son who joined in the campaign. Some UNP supporters were seen agitating against the UNP leadership questioning SB's present place in the party. |
