State owned school bus service in July by Anton Nonis Tender procedure to garner 100 buses initially for transport of children to schools begins on April 19, according to National Transport Commission (NTC) sources. Both, State run buses and the private bus operators are due to enroll in the school bus service. Payment for the buses would be by the NTC. Rs. 10 would be paid per kilometre as fuel costs. The operational costs per kilometre has been calculated by making use of a formula. It works upto Rs.39. The NTC undertakes to subsidise a portion of the operational cost. The bus operator may have to bear the balance. The manner and the rates of payment for both, State and private buses will be the same. The NTC will ensure that the bus operator would not lose in this project. On the whole, they stand to gain for their services, NTC sources said. The authorities have stepped in to make things cheaper for children when travelling to school compared to the heavy charges levied by school vans. "They can travel in the school bus, paying only half the normal fare," one source said. NTC has decided to start the school bus service from next July. |
