Safe drinking water by 2015 for all

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Under the phase two of the Community Service and Water Supply Project implemented by the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply,a new district project office of Community Service Water Supply and Sanitation Project was opened by Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike on March 28 in Gampaha.

Addressing a large gathering Minister Gunawardena pointed out that the Community Water Service and Sanitation Project had catered to the needs of a large rural population, especially in the field of safe drinking water and sanitation. He said that approximately 510,000 people in seven districts, along with the Gampaha District had been using the facilities and added that it was the bounden duty of the UPFA Government to raise the standard of living of the people by maintaining sustainable provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Minister Gunawardena emphasised that the previous government had taken a decision to close down the community water supply and sanitation projects which would have established the sustainability of water supply systems in Sri Lanka and added that under President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's new concept, his Ministry was able to successfully implement the project.

He also noted that steps were being taken to supply safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to the other districts irrespective of political affiliations, caste or creed.

Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike said that he was grateful to Minister Dinesh Gunawardena who undertook a heavy responsibility to supply water and sanitation facilities to almost 11 districts and added that it was the wish of President Kumaratunga to supply safe drinking water to 85 per cent of the people by 2015.

Minister Bandaranaike also said that around 86 Grama Niladari divisions of the Gampaha district were being supplied with portable water and sanitation facilities over a period of 13 years and the phase two of the new project would supply water and sanitation facilities to Attanagalla, Gampaha, Mahara and Ja-ela divisional secretariat areas covering 96 Grama Niladari divisions.

Western Provision Governor Alavi Mowlana, Deputy Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Deputy Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Pandu Bandaranaike were also present at the project office opening ceremony.
