Rs. 1,900m for road by Anura Maitipe The government has allocated Rs. 1,900 million to implement the national plan for integration of the road network, a spokesman for the Ministry of Highways told the Sunday Observer. Under this project the main roads,urban roads and rural roads and upper highways will be integrated into the national road network. Over 72 proposed road projects abandoned by the UNF government including Colombo-Katunayake express highway and partly built parallel road to the Galle road would also be implemented soon, he said. The road network in the North and East which had been devastated by war and tsunami disaster will also be reconstructed shortly. In these two provinces over 50 bridges were badly damaged. The reconstruction of these bridges alone would cost Rs. 400 million. Reconstruction of these bridges have already commenced, he added. In addition, another Rs. 300 million has been allocated to reconstruct rural roads coming under the Pradaseeya Saba, Urban Councils and Provincial Councils. |
