UN Secy-General condoles

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan has expressed his highest consideration to the families of Corporal J. B. A. S. Jayasinghe of Beliatte and Lance Corporal H. M. Wijesinghe of Badulla who were killed while on peace keeping assignment with the United Nations in Haiti a week ago.

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his letter of condolence to the Acting Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in the USA has expressed his condolences to the Government of Sri Lanka and to the bereaved families of the Lankan peace keepers killed in Haiti.

Kofi Annan has also expressed his appreciation to the service rendered by the deceased Lankan soldiers towards establishing peace in Haiti. Meanwhile the Army media division told the Sunday Observer that the Sri Lankan Army expects that the bereaved families would be compensated sufficiently and each family would receive around US $ 50,000 as compensation.
