Harassed migrant workers receive Rs. 2.3million by Ananda Kannangara The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment last week awarded Rs. 2.3 million as compensation among 41 Sri Lankan migrant workers who faced numerous physical harassments while being employed in foreign countries last year. Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratna distributed the cheques among the recipients. The next of kin of five Lankan workers who lost their lives in the Middle East also received compensation from the Minister. While thanking the victimised workers for the invaluable service rendered during their tenure abroad, the Minister said that the Government would not isolate any of the workers at a time they face unexpected hardships on foreign lands. The Minister also lamented the pathetic situation of some workers who became disabled during their stint abroad and said that steps have been taken by the Government to protect all Lankan migrant workers through a special diplomatic safety net. He also discussed with victimised workers about numerous harassments they faced in those countries and about their present grievances. He further promised the workers that a special team of labour officials
will be sent to several Middle Eastern countries shortly to discuss with
foreign labour officials and also employers on matters related to the poor
salaries being paid to Lankan housemaids. |
