NPC will not bow to pressure by Jayampathy Jayasinghe A religious ceremony of different faiths was held to bless the shifting of the National Police Commission (NPC) to premises no 109, Galle Road Colombo 3 last week. A distinguished gathering of state officials including the Attorney General, the Secretary Internal Ministry, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Deputy Inspector of Police (DIG's) were present on the occasion. The Chairman of the National Police Commission Ranjith Abeysuriya speaking on the occasion said this was the fourth occasion where the NPC has shifted its office. Although rolling stone gathers no moss the NPC has gone from strength to strength. "From day one the NPC had not lost no time in getting down to business. We have had 125 meetings up to now." he said. The NPC Chairman referring to a recent television talk show said that a deputy minister was malicious and had attempted to run down the NPC by saying that it consisted of ineffective old persons between the ages of 70-80. "It is an outright lie. Although I have reached 70 I have been blessed with good health." The NPC more often receive brick bats and little praise, he said. He commended the IGP Chandra Fernando for his role in combating crime and said criminals are on the run these days and to keep up the good work. "The NPC will not yield to any outside pressure and will protect policemen from any outside interference. He said the NPC was not there to police the police but to act in consultation with the Inspector General of Police and it will not take instructions from any minister under powers vested in commission under the 17th amendment. |
