EWM keeps Mercantile League title

East West Marketing retained the Singer-MCA Premier League title for the second successive year when they finished on top of the table, unbeaten with 5 wins and one 'no-decision'.

East West's last league outing against Janashakthi at Braybrooke Place was rained off with both teams sharing one point each. The match got off to a late start at 10.35 a.m. with East West Marketing invited to bat and the match reduced to 48 overs a side.

Inspired by a blazing knock by opener, Malintha Warnapura (65 runs in 49 balls, inclusive of 10 fours and 3 sixes), East West was well placed at 187 for 4 in 31.3 overs when the rains came down at 1.10 p.m.

With further play not possible, the match was called off at 3.35 p.m.

Janashakthi will play their last game and the last match in the league, against Sampath Bank, today at the Colts grounds. (RA)
