Oshadi Gunasekera - a T.T. star on the way

In recent years, Ambalangoda has produced many table tennis players and if they are trained well and given the right break at the right time are bound to make good at the highest level. Several players gained berths in the national squads.

Another up-and-coming player who has given a clear indication about her potential is 11-year-old Oshadi Gunasekera who became the girls under-11 champion at the Nugegoda Open Table Tennis championships concluded at S. Thomas' College indoor stadium, Mt. Lavinia.

Oshadi Gunasekera is a Grade six student of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda. She beat Kavindi Hallewala of Southlands College Galle in the final 11-8, 4-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5.

Gunasekera started her table tennis career in 2000 and won the girls under-7 title at the tournament organised by Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda. She has performed well in the tournaments conducted from 2001-Southern Province under-7 girls runner-up, 2002-All Island inter-school girls under-9 runner-up, All-Island inter-school under-10 champion, 2003-57th Junior Nationals under-9 girls runner-up, Western Province under-9 runner-up, Munidasa Kumaratunga Memorial Open girls under-9 runner-up.

Southern Province girls under-9 runner-up, Ashok Melvani Memorial open girls under-9 runner-up, All-Island inter-school girls under-9 runner-up. All Island inter-school under 10 ('B' Division) champion. 2004-All Island inter school under 10 and 12 champions, 2005-All-Island inter-school girls under-11 runner-up.

She is following her parents Anura and Samantha's footsteps as both were good at school sports level and her aunt Namal Gunasekera_a former national player. Oshadi's ambition in table tennis is first to win the Junior National title and then continue and reach national level. Adequate exposure to higher levels of the game and proper handling is likely to take the girl up in the ladder of success.
