Rumours :

Solid as they come

by Mahes Perera

A year ago the five piece band Rumours became a reality after a great deal of should-we or should-we-not discussions. Neomal Pieris guitarist/vocalist was keen on moving into the competitive Colombo scene and influenced his friends that playing as a group will be a happy experience for all of them, since their interests in music varied and that was an ideal base for their repertoire.

So with the catchy name Rumours, the outfit was fortunate to land a gig for themselves at a nitespot that is high in popularity today, the Union Bar Grill at the Hilton Residency. Since then, the band has had successful outings at the Keg, Hippos, the Swimming Club and at many private functions.

Rumours repertoire is an elastic stretch with leader Neomal shouldering the major load of vocals, be they rock, retro, ballad or country. Dayal Athukorale guitarist/vocalist enjoys his rock from the books of Eric Clapton, Guns 'n Roses, the Eagles to name a few of his favourite rock bands.

The keyboardist Sampath Perera is a Latin freak, with influences drawn from Santana quite naturally. But that does not mean that his repertoire is on one track. He gives a lot of support to the varied styles that the band plays. Duminda Hettiarachchi the multi instrumentalist, could switch with ease to the keyboards or guitar if the need arises even though he is Rumours' regular bassist giving that thrust to a successful dance band. Finally there's drummer boy Narendra Guneratne whose slick and rhythm expressions on snare and cymbal are catchy and demanding which gets the groovers on to the floor fast.

"Music life has been good for us" says a happy Neomal. "We now play regular dates at Hippos, Bambalapitiya on Thursdays which has become a popular nitespot for groovers. It's a ladies night on Thursdays with complimentary entrance and added advantages like complimentary cocktails.

It's amazing how the place gets crowded on a Thursday night! Our schedule is somewhat crowded. On Fridays we alternate at the Warehouse, Wattala, and the Swimming Club, Colombo while we have a regular Saturday gig at the Crescat in the evenings," continues Neomal.

All the members work a 9 to 5 routine and the band Rumours is determined to work themselves into a recognised force in the Colombo circuit.

They are working hard at rehearsals to widen their repertoire to take in most of the contemporary pop hits apart from their repertoire of established pop, rock, latin hits and evergreens.
