Cinnamon Gardens tops in mosquito breeding According to figures released by the Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Cinnaman Gardens has the highest number of premises with mosquito larvae (12%) followed by Havelock Town (11%), and Kolluptiya (9%). Narahenpita, Kirula, Keselwate, Aluthkade, Grandpass, Wekanda, Maradana, Maligakanda, Mattakkuliya and Modera are also heavy mosquito breeding areas. The percentage of houses with a mosquito free environment has dropped from 7% in 2004 to 5.3 in 2005. The percentage of houses with a potential for mosquito breeding has reached the alarming figure of 94.5. Municipal health authorities warn that another outbreak of Dengue in the city is likely if the citizens, especially those who belong to the higher income bracket do not show a higher community interest and participation. The Dengue Prevention Campaign of the Colombo Municipal Campaign concluded on April 7 - the World Health Day. During a period of six days Medical Officers, Public Health Inspectors, Nurses, Midwives, Health Education Officers, Health Instructors and pupil nurses and school children participated in the campaign which covered 20,000 premises in all administrative districts of the city. The CMC has requested the householders to cleanup their environment and those failing to comply by April 15 will be prosecuted by the Council, said a press release issued by the Chief Medical Officer of the CMC, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam. |
