Nimal Horana dies

A veteran journalist and former editor of Silumina, Nimal Horana(75) died after a brief illness at the Teaching Hospital Ragama yesterday.

Treading in the footsteps of a pioneer left wing mentor Henry Peiris, Nimal was actively involved in the movement and was loyal to it until his death.

He served as the Editor of Samasamajaya and was attached to the editorials of several Sinhala publications such as Janadina and Dinakara. He edited another Sinhala newspaper Dinaresa and worked to bring unity between the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and Sri Lanka Freedom Party. With the take over of the Lake House in 1970, Nimal joined the Silumina editorial. He returned to Lake House as the Editor of Silumina when the People's Alliance formed the Government in 1994. Later he served at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. as an Editorial Consultant until the PA Government was defeated in 2001. Nimal, a leading poet of the Colombo tradition authored several books.

The funeral will be held tomorrow. His remains lie at No. 474D, Ranmuthugala, Kadawata.
