More buses to cope with avurudhu exodus

Transport officials said additional buses had been deployed to provide transport facilities for thousands who head home for the festival vacation.

"Two thousand buses now operate from the Gunasinghe Pura Bus Stand and 2,500 operate from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand," Provincial Transport Authority President J.M.Somasiri told the Sunday Observer. Commencing from last Thursday, additional buses have been added to the long distance service.

He said special long distance buses would operate between Colombo and Katunayake for the convenience of the employees of the Free Trade Zones.

Special long distance night services from Colombo to Anuradhapura, Kandy, Matara, Galle and Badulla and other main towns have also been in operation from April 7 to April 22.

Additional buses have been deployed for the service between Colombo and Nittambuwa, Kaduwela, Avissawella, Kalutara and Panadura.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the Colombo Central Bus Terminal said yesterday that 65 additional buses were deployed for long distance destinations of Kataragama, Matara, Anuradapura and Badulla.
