Black Gold off Lankan shores by Anura Maitipe Oil deposits have been traced off the shores of Sri Lanka by a Norwegian oil exploration team, Director General Development Unit of Petroleum Corporation, Titus Jayawardena told the Sunday Observer. The first information about this was received in 2001 and then Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) urged Norway to help in oil exploration in Sri Lankan seas. Jayawardena said that research conducted by the Norwegian team in the Sri Lankan sea territories has traced oil deposits in the sea off western coastal area from Manner to Galle. A full report over the research conducted by the Norwegian team has already been submitted to the mother company in Australia, and it would be handed over to Sri Lankan government in July 2005, he added. CPC expects to commence oil excavation off the Srilankan shores in September 2005 with the help of foreign collaborates. They expect to divide this zone into eight sub zones in order to call for Worldwide tenders, he added. The highest bidder of the tender would be entrusted with excavation of oil off the Western coast. With the implementation of this project Sri Lanka would be able to save billions of rupees spent on oil imports, he pointed out. |
