Assessment of the differently abled separately

by Ananda Kannangara

The Special Advisory Committee, appointed by the Government recently to do a feasibility study of educational activities of differently abled children, has recommended that all future public examinations, conducted for physically and mentally affected candidates should be monitored by a separate assessment board, represented by a psychiatrist, an ophthalmologist and an ENT surgeon.

The Committee comprising Special Education Advisor, K. Piyasena, Assistant Examination Commissioner, Sarath Wickramasooriya, Deputy Education Director, N. Tennekoon and W. M. K. Weerakoon has also recommended that the Assessment Board should be established under the guidance of the Commissioner of Examinations.

"Focusing on educational activities of differently abled children in the country is increasing rapidly and the establishment of such a Assessment Board is immensely needed to look into their numerous educational problems," Advisor, Special Education K. Piyasena told the Sunday Observer.

He said recent research has indicated that nearly 100 differently abled children are facing the forthcoming GCE A/L in June and O/L examination in December at three examination centres located in Ratmalana, Tangalle and Mahawewa.

"In our report we also brought it to the notice of the Education Ministry that differently abled candidates, especially those who are mentally backward should be given question papers written in a very simple manner and also to grant additional time to answer the question papers," he said. He said that the committee also recommended to the Education Ministry to allow all differently abled candidates to use calculators when answering certain question papers.

Asked what recommendations the Committee would suggest for the benefit of differently abled undergraduates, Piyasena said that 98 of them are presently studying at various universities in the country including the North and East and would suggest to the Education Ministry about a special program to provide them with suitable employment as soon as they complete their university career.
