Maldives welcomes EU suggestions The Maldives will act upon the suggestions made by the delegation of the European Union in expediting the ongoing democratic reform process. In a statement issued by the President's Office of the Maldives the country welcomed the positive report of the European Parliament delegation for relations with SAARC countries, following their visit to the Maldives last month. "The delegation took a special interest in the ongoing democratic freedom process in the country. Their expression of support for and confidence in both the principles and objectives of the reform program is a deserved endorsement for the reform agenda to which we are committed," Chief Government spokesman Dr.Ahmed Shaheed said. Dr.Ahmed said that the Government would listen to, and act upon, the delegations' suggestions for expediting the reforms. Indeed some of the areas recommended by the delegation for immediate progress in particular the need for greater transparency and modernisation of the judicial process, and strengthening of media freedom. Other priority areas in which policy actions being carried out are independent of constitutional reform where new legislation is being drafted. He also said that the Government recognises that a healthy and vibrant civil society is fundamental to a modern democracy. The Government's policy is to encourage and support civil society organisations, as evident from recently enacted legislation, and from the manner in which the post tsunami recovery and reconstruction effort are being carried out. |
