SLMM confirms Iranamadu runway

From Tamil Press by S. Selvakumar

The Virakesari quoted Erik Solheim telling and English newspaper in Oslo that the peace process could get delayed but a joint mechanism would soon be a reality.

The Thinakaran on Tuesday said the SLMM confirmed that there was a runway in Iranamadu constructed by the LTTE.

The Presidential Commission that probes into attacks on LTTE commenced its sittings in Batticaloa on Monday and several high officials of the security forces gave evidence, the Thinakkural reported. The Virakesari quoted a US congressman who returned to Colombo after a two day stay in Kilinochchi and said an infrastructure that would be conducive for a separate state appears to be in place in Tiger controlled areas.

Following opposition to the CWC hierarchy by district and provincial leaders the CWC high command had threatened them by displaying undated blank letters but signed by those provincial leaders, the Sudaroli reported. The two state banks handed 9,500 applications to the Finance Ministry received by the banks seeking post tsunami housing loans, the Thinakaran said on Wednesday.

TNA MP N. Raviraj demanded in the House that the President should make available details of tsunami aid received from international organisations and foreign governments, the Virakesari said in a front page report.

The Thinakkural led with the story that PAFREL claimed that there was discrimination against the North-east in the post tsunami resettlement programme. The joint opposition in Parliament complained to WB, IMF and other donor agencies that the government failed to get the advice of opposition parties in post-tsunami rehabilitation, the Sudaroli's main story said.

A huge demonstration and rally were held at Nallur and Mullaitivu demanding the establishment of a joint mechanism between the government and the LTTE, the Virakesari said on Thursday.

Muslims in Pottuvil demonstrated against erecting a Buddha statue in the predominantly Muslim populated town. S. B. Dissanayake in a letter written to Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has highly criticised his actions in activities related to release of the UNP parliamentarian from prisons and in the appointment of party organisers in certain districts, the Sudaroli said in its lead story.

Talks held between CEB and CPC union leaders and government representatives ended without a decision and talks would be resumed after the New Year. Customs initiated an inquiry against some of its officers said to have solicited a bribe of Rs. 30 million to release a container, the Thinakaran reported.

President and CWC leader Thondaman held discussions with the President and Sudaroli screamed in its lead story on Friday that the CWC would commit itself to the government and a high profile Cabinet ministry was in the offing for Arumugam. The Cabinet approved a proposal by the JVP that a bill be submitted in the House to prevent the privatisation of the CEB.

Following the explosion of two bombs in Pottuvil town STF personnel attacked members of the public and people who sought refuge in nearby boutiques, the Virakesari said on Friday.

The Thinakaran in its lead story said a final decision on the joint mechanism would be reached once Thamilselvan returns to the country after his European tour.
