Peterite Peiris wins All-Island title for 2nd successive year

by A. C. de Silva and Leslie Fernando

Lahiru Peiris of St. Peter's College made it two-in-a-row and thereby won the OBSERVER-BATA Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2005 repeating his success of last year.

Lahiru had good support throughout the contest and led most of the time. He totalled 38,363 votes in the 10-week old contest, getting 13,786 votes in coupon number 10 which was the final coupon in the contest.

In second position is Damith Gunaratne of D. S. Senanayake College with 37,287 and the difference between the winner and first runner-up was 1,976 votes.

However, Damith Gunaratne received the most number of votes in the final coupon. He received 22,384 votes but with the tremendous support that Peiris of St. Peter's received throughout the contest. Peiris was able to edge out Gunaratne for the top award.

In third position was Royalist Dulanjaya Wijeratne who received 33,170 votes and fourth was Pramodth Fernando of St. Anthony's Katugastota who had a total of 25,974 votes.

Though there was heavy voting in the All-Island Contest in the final week, there was somewhat of a near shock result in the Outstation Contest where steady voting for Andy Solomons of St. Thomas' College, Kotte helped him to win Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year - Outstation with 24,943 votes.

The runner-up to Solomons was a real outstation cricketer in Eranda de Silva of Tissa MMV with 13,656 votes. Eranda de Silva was placed ninth after the voting on Coupon No. 9 with just 451 votes, but he received 13,205 votes on Coupon No. 10 to jump into the runners-up spot in the Outstation Contest. In third position was T. M. Siriwardena of Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya with 8,547 votes, climbing two places from fifth to third spot.
