Alcatel solution to reconnect tsunami hit areas

Alcatel, a top French based telecommunication global player has handed over a new mobile container solution to Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) to reconnect the people in tsunami affected areas.

In the aftermath of the tsunami disaster most of the telecommunication towers and switch boards belonging to SLT were destroyed especially in the South.

This mobile container could reconnect telephone lines until those towers and switch boards are being installed, Alcatel Senior Country Officer - Sri Lanka and the Maldives A. Sethu Raman said.

He said the containerised E 10 Multi service Multimedia solution will reconnect the people in Hambantota and the rest of the areas affected by the tsunami disaster.

This telecommunication exchange connects 15,000 residents in the south of the country and has the added benefits of functioning as a mobile unit, which could be transported to any location in the event of a sudden disaster.

Sethu Raman said the solution is a fully loaded container that has all components such as power supply, AC, testing and software that guarantees easy integration with existing network components, while providing a continuous service. Alcatel's South Asia President Ravi Sharma said the supply and installation of this large and innovative containerised telephone exchange is another step by the company to develop Sri Lanka's telecommunication industry.

He said Sri Lanka is playing an important role in the South Asia region where the telecommunication sector is concerned and it has the highest tele density in the region.

SLT Chief Executive Officer Shuhei Anan said that during the last few years Sri Lanka registered considerable growth in the telecommunication sector.
