Foster love not hate by S. Sudhir Barr-Kumarakulasinghe. In this time and age, members of the media regularly accost us with the negative movements of society that customarily help immediate public-gut-reaction spill malcontent in our communities. Be that as it may as Jonathan Alter observed in - "Newsweek" March 7th, 2005 page 51: "Under the Law of Media Oscillation, the only safe prediction is that a static, unchanging political narrative is impossible. Stuff happens in war and politics. And when it doesn't, the media will half-consciously rearrange all the atoms of emphasis and particles of story choice to make it seem so." Would we all not agree that prior to the resolutions and adjustments of whatever constitutional networkings are needed right now, the crying need of the hour is that the message of love between the communities here in Sri Lanka be broadcast by the media, the length and breadth of our land, and in doing so help the public see for themselves that there are many Sinhalese who love Tamils, and many Tamils who love Sinhalese, and in day to day living reach out to one another. The Muslims, Malays and Burghers are also no exception to this rule of conduct of love. Although it seems imperative that we expound in some detail the political-technicalities of drafting appropriate measures for peace, and although this be a valid necessity in the pipeline of peace, we need to consider what lies at the base of our war-mongerings. It is indeed true, that we the Public need to be kept aware of the nefarious movements of the corrupt - nevertheless we could regularly also be put in the picture more liberally, of the attractive going - on; that inspire the public to great heights. I believe most Media personnel, and the media-moguls both in the state and private sector are aware of the anomalies that I have touched upon, so perhaps we the public could be helped in the process of caring for one another of all communities. |
