UNP unhappy over school grade one admission probe

by Ananda Kannangara

The UNP on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the Government has acted recently to investigate irregularities, committed by certain school principals on grade one admissions. Speaking at a media briefing, UNP spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris said that the Presidential Investigation Unit (PIU), which was a political body had no legal right to investigate official matters, related to school principals or any other public servants.

"We are not opposed to any investigation carried out by the Government in a proper way against any corrupt public official in the country, but we have lost confidence over the method, the so called political institution adopted to handle investigation of several school principals.

He said that public servants are duly appointed by the Public Service Commission (PSC) and therefore any investigation carried out against them should be handled by either the PSC, the CID or the Bribery Commission which are the main State institutions handling such activities.
