Kandy SC drub Old Zahirians 65-7 Defending champions, Kandy Sports Club, opened their campaign in a bid to retain the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship this year too, on a very successful note at Longden Place yesterday when they trounced Old Zahirians by 65 points to 7 in their first-round clash. Kandy led 38-7 at halftime and accounted for five goals and six tries to OZSC's solitary goal. On Friday, CR & FC, huffed and puffed before overcoming Navy 22 points (1 goal, 3 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) at Welisara. There are two games down for decisions today (Sunday) with the best being the battle between Army and Police at Galle Face, while Air Force take on CH & FC at Ratmalana. The Soldiers led by Sri Lanka third-row forward Herathge Karunaratne have in their side three former captains in Ajith Pieris, Rajapakse and Kapila Knowlton with former Trinity, Havelocks, Army and Sri Lanka scrum-half, Brigadier (rtd) Jupana Jayawardena as coach. Police led by No. 8 Welagedera is coached by Norman Silva and Sudath Sampath - both former national players of repute. CH led by Suranga Jayakoddy should comfortably get the better of the Airmen led by Saumya Fernando. The former too have the services of three ex-captains in Sameera Wijesinghe, Sashika Cooray and Milinda Jayasinghe and are coached by Wazeel Hafiz, who coached CR a few years back. (L.G.) |
