Daniel Lee aims to swim for Sri Lanka by Leslie Fernando The champion swimmer Daniel Lee of Asian International School will look for better results when he joins the White Friars Boys Catholic School, the Victorian State champion swimming school for further training and to continue studies for three years. Grant Watson, the Australian coach presently here has initiated Lee's visit to Australia. Lee who has performed well for Asian International School at the Junior Nationals, Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championships, National Age Group Championships, Senior National Championships and Inter-International Schools Swimming Championships has been invited by the champion swimming school in Victoria. He will study and also swim for the school at all inter-school and club meets. Lee has put up a creditable performances for 2003, 2004 and 2005. At the Inter-International School Swimming Championships, he became under-16 champion winning the 50 metres freestyle (27.78 secs), 100 metres freestyle (59.37 secs) and 200 metres individual medley (2:34.6 secs). He has established records in all three events. At the Sri Lanka Schools and National Age Group Meets, Lee came first in the 100 and 200 metres freestyle events and the 50 metres butterfly. At the Senior National Championships, Lee swam in the higher age category and came fourth in 50, 100, 200 metres freestyle and 50 metres butterfly. The 15-year-old Lee, first trained under Patrick Silva at the SSC and later was coached by the National coach E. G. A. Wilson. In the year 2003, he trained for six months in Sydney and came back. He went back to Melbourne in July 2004 for six weeks where he was trained at the Nunnawading Swimming Club under guidance of Grant Watson who is here to coach the Royal College swimmers. In fact Brooke Hanson, the silver Medallist in the 100 metres breast stroke at the Athen's Olympics was coached by Grant Watson. Lee will also train and swim at the Nunnawading Aquatic Club, Melbourne, where Conrad Francis, the former Josephian and Olympic swimmer also had his training for several years. Lee will train consciously in an attempt to represent Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games to be held in 2006 April in Colombo and then to achieve success at the Asian Age Group Swimming Meet and also to gain further success at Meets for Sri Lanka. |
