Asian Under 14 tennis April 25 to 30

The Asian Under-14 Tennis Championships for both boys and girls is to be hosted by Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) for the second consecutive year at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from April 25 to 30.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SLTA, Lionel Almeida, said that this tournament is being sponsored by Australian Open again under the aegis of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) and is the beginning of an under-14 ranking system for players in Asia.

This is one of the many regional tournaments that make up the series with the top eight ranked boys and girls at the end of the series qualifying to play in a series of team events (the Australian National Championship and the Asian under-14 Series Master finals) and also witness the Australian Open next year.

Malaysia has entered two players and SLTA are expecting more entries this week. Seven Sri Lankans habe entered for the singles with the qualifying rounds started on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the SLTA has opened another door for the development of junior tennis in the outstations by launching the Inter-Regional Championship for under-12s which ends today (Sunday) at Greenpath.

Almeida said that this mini tennis programme started in 1999 for those between 5 and 10 years has now been extended to under-12 and has brought in more than 22,000 new players. Eight regions (Negombo, Kandy, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Colombo and Matale) are participating at this inagural event for boys and girls in both singles and doubles.
