DLB targets Rs1.3 b sales increase

by L.S.A. Wedaarachchi

The Development Lotteries Board (DLB) targets to increase its sales by Rs. 1.3 billion and expects to contribute more funds to development activities in the country through the President's Fund in 2005.

The sales of DLB last year were Rs. 4.3 billion and a considerable slice of it was contributed to the President's Fund.

Chairman and CEO of the Development Lotteries Board W.P.S. Jayawardana said an exclusive marketing strategy to achieve the task of earning Rs. 5.5 billion in sales in 2005 is operative and DLB is confident about its success.

The main financer to the President's Fund is the DLB and DLB's entire earnings excluding lottery prizes and institutional expenses are channelled to the President's Fund. Millions of rupees were spent by the President's Fund during the last few years for the well-being of society and for various development projects in the fields of education, health, water supply, poverty alleviation and national disaster management in the country.

The amount and number of prizes will also be increased to be on par with the increase in sales of DLB lotteries. In 2004, Rs. 2,140 million was given by the DLB for lottery winners. Jayoda, Saturday Fortune and Development Fortune are the main lottery tickets sold by DLB.

In 1983 the DLB commenced its activities as a development project under the Ministry of Plan Implementation and in 1997 DLB was incorporated as a statutory body under a Parliamentary Act.

DLB pioneered instant lottery tickets to the Sri Lankan market and in 1983, DLB which earned prestige in introducing novel marketing strategies introduced a novel scheme to present prizes for non-winners of development lottery ticket buyers as well.

So far 510 three-wheelers have been given under the scheme to development fortune lottery ticket buyers. Non-winners of the Saturday fortune as well as Jayoda lottery ticket buyers are also entitled to such valuable gifts under this scheme implemented by DLB. DLB also implemented a special Health Insurance Scheme for its sales agents. At present there are 56 wholesale agents and 1,900 lottery agents islandwide for the distribution and sales of lottery tickets.

Over 200,000 self-employment opportunities were also created under the DLB sales network.
