BiC spells out stationery

by Elmo Leonard

Very soon you will see in the local marketplace, stationery such as pens, ink, gum, erasers, tippex and everything else which belongs to the written world of business and personnel communication, sold under the trade name BiC. And, if you are puzzled, rest awhile.

Then, you will remember that the trade mark BiC is synonymous in our country with disposable razors.

BiC is a household word, worldwide, for razors (for males and females), stationery products and lighters, area manager for BiC products in the Middle East and South Asia, Manos Nikolakis, told local distributors, in Colombo.

Societe BIC, headquartered in France, gave the world the throw-away ball point pen, razor and lighter and with it revolutionised the use of such useful and essential every-day human tools. BiC did away with the monotony which went with the human use of lighting, writing and shaving.

The first throw-away razor appeared in the Sri Lankan marketplace in 1980, under the brand name BiC.

It was much later that throw-away razors bearing prestigious brand names such as Gillette and Wilkinson were introduced, here. BiC does battle with other brands of razors, being priced competitively and bearing efficient features of usage.

BiC is one of the 100 top most trade marks in the world, it was also claimed. Asked why Sociate BIC took so long to introduce their stationery products to Sri Lanka, Nikolakis said that they had waited until the BiC razors were firmly established in the local market. A pack of four BiC ballpoint pens in blue, black, red and green is retailed at Rs 140.

The local distributor for BiC products is Darley Butler and Company. The BiC range of products are those which encompass easy and simple human use, innovated by mindful and practical brains. The BiC brand names are market leaders in Europe and America with much room for expansion in the Middle East and South Asia.

BiC products are made in Egypt, France and South Africa, among other countries and the components are assembled in yet other countries. BiC razors are "assembled" in Sri Lanka by Darley Butler.

In time the Darley Butler assembling unit could be stepped up to feed an export market in the South Asian region, Nikolakis said.

Frenchwoman, Corinne Prevost who is the trade marketing manager for BiC stationery said that the BiC brand of ballpoint pens bear a platinum point ensuring durability.
