A unique celebration

Lovers of Sri Lanka's rich heritage of dance and drumming will be treated to a unique celebration of traditional Sri Lankan dance and drum rhythms in 'Heli Rangara', - A concert featuring three of the finest young exponents in the field, at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on May 19.

'Heli Rangara' will showcase Mohan Sudusinghe, an outstanding professional dancer, accompanied by Susantha and Prasantha Rupathilake, two exciting and highly skilled young drummers.

This will be the talented trio's first performance together, and the audience is assured of a rare treat of traditional drumming and dancing.

The show will be an exciting presentation of a profusion of the pulsating sounds of indigenous percussion, dominated by the drums, enriching the beauty and grace of traditional dances, set amid a riot of colourful costumes and lighting.

The entire performance will be choreographed, designed and planned by Susantha, Prasantha and Mohan.

A journey in the world of dreams

An exhibition of Italian Batiks by Eliana Spinelli will be held at Finomenal Space Gallery from May 18 to 25 from 10.30 a.m. - 11.30 p.m. on exhibit will be an assembly of various floral boards, a composition of expressions, modern traces, for the small and medium size Batiks. According to the artist, the large size Batiks are memories of journeys that take over like a note pad on which stories are impressed and memories that remind her of new emotions.

"Looking at these paintings you feel transported into a new dimension almost therapeutic, a dimension in which one feels at peace, one feels wrapped up by the various intensity of colour and shades and the vitality they give."

Eliana's work has often been described as a work of art similar to woven or embroided wall hangings. The main difference she says is that the silk they are painted on moves to the slightest breath of wind giving the Batik a life of its own. It reflects different ranges of colour as it moves giving a vibrant solution to its surroundings creating almost a surreal, poetic atmosphere but at the same time vibrant like the theme should be.

Eliana who was born August 20, 1951 in San Giorgia di Nogaro, Udine, in Italy has a degree at the instituto Statale d'Arte of Udine in Textile printing and weaving.

She is also a lecturer in the art of textile printing and weaving and State lecturer for professional textile designing at the Instituto Statale d'Arte of Udine. She is also a painting restorer and colour consultant.
