How Sri Lankans are not united !

When it comes to violating the rights of others and exhibiting indecent behaviour and lack of common sense, no other nations are as united as we are. Look at the national past time of spitting in public places.

One has only to look down on any road, pavement or public ground. Everywhere you will see sputum liberally spread. My surprise I found that almost all are guilty of this indecent behaviour. At first I thought it should be the uneducated people who have this habit.

I observed that even educated well dressed gentlemen open up their car windows and spit liberally. The feminine gender is not second to any men in this regard. I have seen jeans clad mod looking educated girls are equally vibrant in this nasty habit. So what is wrong with us. Why do we spit on the public places!

What do you call your phone?

The Oxford Dictionary clearly gives the meaning of the word mobile as "to be moved" or "ability to move". It also gives the meaning of the word portable as "ability to carry".

In this context one should therefore consider whether a telephone should be called mobile. Actually it is being carried and not moved justifiably we could call it a Cellular Phone. The term hand-phone is incorrectly being used. To reckon with aren't all phones handled by hand and certainly not by any other means.

This error is being made by most Sri Lankans, including intellectuals. The correct position should be enlightened for the knowledge of all telephone users. Pronto - so that we could be free of blame or subjects of criticism in the future.

Fighting crime

During the short period that the present IGP Mr. Chandra Fernando was in charge, the Police has done a creditable job, specially in controlling crime and attempting to put discipline into the motorists.

We should remember that police alone cannot bring discipline to the society. Nor can draconian laws, more prisons, and not even a bigger Police force.

A just and a more equitable economic system, a more efficient and a modernised legal system, better education and better training (e.g. in driving) would certainly enhance the chances of having a more disciplined society.

It is the task not only for the politicians. It is a duty of every father, every mother, every teacher, and every citizen of this country. Together, we could build a better nation.

Joint mechanism

All communities living should keep it in their mind that we all are known as 'Sri Lankans'. True we belong to various religions on national issues we have to forget our differences and co-operate with the Government in power.

It is true and now the time has come for Government and the People to go for a Joint Mechanism with the LTTE. The President took a bold decision to accept the decision taken by the LTTE in the interest of the Country and People despite various objections from different elements and political parties.

Now that we have received 2.2 billion US dollars collectively contributed from World Bank, ADB, NGOs and Donor Countries, which is very useful at a time like this period.

This Joint Mechanism with the LTTE is an adhoc structure for one year in order to find solutions for tsunami Victims and Development of the affected areas. This is a correct path and a golden opportunity for Sinhala people to live peacefully with Tamils and Muslims.

Environment matters the most

The time has come for us to think very positively about preserving the environment. Considering the climatic changes experienced at present, it is quite obvious that the environment is not receiving the desired attention.

Let us not irritate nature, compelling same to misbehave paving the way for disastrous consequences, that would destroy us in return. Let us not pollute the environment thereby preserving this beautiful country of ours, to remain what it was providing our contribution to the world for this purpose, for which purpose preserving the environment matters the most.

Sivaram's killers

The Media Minister gave an assurance in Parliament to bring Sivaram's killers to justice. But whether the police who must do the actual investigation - will pursue same with full vigour, like they did in the Ambepitiya killing is very doubtful.

Both murders are similar - but Sivaram's was right opposite a city police station, where a policeman is always at the entrance gate! Sivaram has already been labelled as a 'terrorist' by the JHU and others. As such policemen who are assigned the case may hesitate to actually find the killers.

According to media reports, the two bullet casings were not taken into custody in a way to safeguard the fingerprints on them - just like the casings picked up by a homeguard at the Udathalawinna murders site - as was revealed during the court case proceedings! Police in other countries enforce Crime Scene Procedure soon after cordoning off the site. Are the police under pressure?
